Most of the construction industry around here is a race to the bottom, so it’s always nice to see some older equipment that’s been well kept instead of run into the ground.

Awesome Austin would like this even though it’s not a U series. Those old Macks are pretty good looking trucks. It’s kind of uncommon to see one with what I presume is one of those container hauler upfits when most were dump trucks.

Yeah most I’ve seen, which isn’t many, we’re dump trucks. This one has a steel deck with a beavertail and flip down ramps  to haul around a backhoe I think.

Yeah I couldn’t quite place the upfit from that photo. It’s a pretty specialized truck so perhaps it’s hard enough to replace that it makes sense to maintain it better. Not that it ever makes much financial sense to run something into the ground but this just more so .

Actually the fact that it’s specialized makes it even weirder around here to still be in use. Most guys seem to have a heavy duty pickup and tow equipment around on trailers, and only replace the truck and/or trailer when it’s been truly beat to shit. Bigger stuff is hauled by semi tractors on lowboys, I can’t recall when I last saw a truck that just has one job other than a fuel truck.

Whoa, did you just see it somewhere too, or do you know the owner?

I know the owner. He’s lovingly restored ot over the last couple of years.

Small world eh?

Yes, because a semi truck and one of those low flatbed trailers with wheel well intrusions are usually what hauls those things and that would have a lower center of mass, more stabile, etc. Is it possible this is an independent contractor who has just one piece of equipment he operates? That sounds like a really unlikely scenario though.

That’s my guess, even though it is unlikely. I can’t see a company keeping this truck around just to haul one thing when they could have more versatile stuff instead

Same. I don’t see any situation where it makes sense for a company to have an upfit like that to begin with.

Yeah, I’m betting someone just wanted to. ClassicDatsun posted more pics, turns out who knows the owner, he restored it

My work has one for hauling boxes, broke a leaf spring though so it's just sitting, our mechanic loves it and is always telling me what a great truck it is but the boss wants to sell it, we just don't really move our own boxes any more.

Ah that’s too bad. Hopefully it gets fixed, but fair enough if it’s not used much anymore.

When I was choosing our cube van for work I was hoping to get something cool and old but my boss wanted something new

Our truck driver is super slow and lazy so at most he could only switch 2-3 boxes a day, it's easier and cheaper to just get trucking companies to do it. I think he's gonna fix the leaf springs but it's taken off our insurance and listed for sale. It's a pretty cool truck though, I've gotten to ride in it a couple times. Our tractor is an older mack too not sure what kind but that I've gotten to drive around the yard at least, but I only have a class C.
